2.5 Gb/s x 16 Channel Bidirectional Transmission over 560-km of Single-Mode Fiber Using Bidirectional EDFA based on Spectrally Interleaved Synchronized Etalon Filters

Abstract

We implemented a bidirectional EDFA using two spectrally interleaved synchronized etalon filters. This amplifier was used to demonstrate 2.5 Gb/s x 16-channel bidirectional WDM transmission over 560-km long SMF using a re-circulating loop. The experimental results show a good agreement with the theoretically estimated maximum number of concatenated amplifiers. We believe that the proposed amplifiers are well-suited for the use in bidirectional transmission systems.
