Abstract

A maximum output power of 267 mW with a slope efficiency of 62.3% was achieved, using a 37-mm long Ho:ZBLAN waveguide chip with a Ho3+ concentration of 1.0 mol% and a 50% reflectivity output coupler in a folded cavity. This represents an improvement over our previous demonstration. The laser output exhibited near diffraction-limited beam quality (M2 = ∼1.1). Two different Ho:ZBLAN waveguide chips, with Ho3+ concentrations of 1.0 mol% and 2.5 mol%, were compared regarding their lasing performance. The laser output was optimized experimentally using three different output couplers with reflectivities of 50%, 70%, and 98%. The highest slope efficiency was achieved with the output coupler that had a 50% reflectivity.
