Abstract

Recently, occurrence frequency of extreme event like flood and drought is increasing due to climate change following global warming. Especially, droughts which cause damage throughout long term is one of typical natural disaster. Therefore, this study carried out frequency analysis of drought that can quantify duration and severity of drought. Seoul, Daegu, Gwangju and Busan observatories were selected at Meteorological Administration for the drought frequency analysis and were computed Palmer Drought Severity Index. The lowest drought index each a year was extracted from calculational Palmer Drought Severity Index per a month. Frequency analysis carried out using extracted Palmer Drought Severity Index data. Frequency analysis carried out using Boundary Kernel Function that has the advantage of the mixed probability distribution. In the result of the analysis, drought index showed extreme dry is -4.0 in recurrence period between 5 and 10 years. Consequently, Drought can repeatedly happen on the average recurrence period between 5 and 10 years. Therefore, continuous monitoring system about the drought must be set up for minimize drought damage.
