Abstract

In this work, we demonstrated a novel 2-dimensional beam scanning antenna array at a fixed frequency. For a beam scanning in E-plane, a microstrip leaky wave antenna based on a composite right/left handed transmission line structure loading voltage-controlled tuning elements was designed. Measured results show a wide scanning range from 39° to +60° at 8.5GHz. Also a Rotman lens was designed to give additional beam scanning capability in orthogonal direction. Combining these two 1-dimensional scanning methods, a 2-dimensional beam scanning antenna array was implemented on a single substrate in a planar form. Measured results show wide scanning ranges from -33° to 45° and -15° to 15° in E-plane and H-plane, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of 2-dimensioanal beam scanning array using leaky wave antennas at a fixed frequency.
