N2 - In this paper, we propose a rate-constrained object- based hierarchical motion compensation technique, by extending the hierarchical grid interpolation (HGI)[4]. First, we propose an object-based HGI (OHGI) technique, which is an extended version of HGI, to employ for the object-based video coding. In order to achieve the rate-distortion trade-off, inherent in the quadtree segmentation, we employ the greedy algorithm, modified for the OHGI technique, to exploit the rate-distortion trade-off effectively The performance of the proposed technique is evaluated through the simulation, and it is shown that the proposed technique provides better performance than the conventional object-based motion compensation techniques.
