Abstract
The results of an an analytic study of the three-urn model for separation of sand were investigated. The master equation was solved in the thermodynamic limit, and showed the nature of a deformed wave. It was found that the characteristic lifetime of a cluster diverged algebraically with the exponent 1/3 at the limit of stability. The scaling property of the characteristic time scale and the limit of stability were obtained from the characteristic scales of the probability distributions and the mean-field flux equation.
