Abstract

The cutting performance of Al2O3-SiC nanocomposites in machining a gray cast iron was investigated. Particular attention was given to the study of the effect of SiC particle size on tool life of the composite tools. Two effects of the addition of SiC on cutting performance of Al 2O3-based composite tools were demonstrated. Firstly, the matrix grain size of the composites and secondly, the addition of SiC into Al2O3 to intergranular fracture for Al2O 3-SiC nanocomposites. The results show thatAl2O 3-SiC nanocomposites are promising materials for machining application.
