Abstract
Optical conductivity spectra, σ(ω), of perovskite La 1-xCa xMnO 3 (x=0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.6, 0.8, and 1.0) samples were measured over the wide photon-energy region between 5 meV and 30 eV at room temperature. Systematic changes in σ(ω) due to the Ca doping were observed. These doping studies resolved the controversies involving the two lowest-lying optical transitions of LaMnO 3. The first and second transitions were identified as e g↑ 1 → e g↑ 2 and O 2p → e g↑ 2, respectively.
