Abstract

A low-phase-noise engineering qualified model (EQM) local oscillator (LO) has been developed for a Ka-band satellite transponder. A voltage controlled dielectric resonator oscillator (VCDRO) is designed using a high-impedance inverter coupled with a dielectric resonator to improve the phase-noise performances. This EQM LO was made as an environmental experiment for space application and applied to a Ka-band satellite transponder of the EQM level. The LO has harmonic suppression characteristics above 53 dBc and output power of 14.0 dBm ± 0.77 dB over the temperature range of -15+65°C. The phase noise characteristics are exhibited as -102.33 dBc/Hz at 10 KHz and -114.33 dBc/Hz at 100-KHz offset frequencies, respectively.
