Abstract

We have demonstrated directly modulated 2.5 Gb/s x 16-channel WDM transmission over 640 km of SMF using DCF. There was no significant degradation in the receiver sensitivities due to dispersion. The capacity of this system could be increased easily without adjusting the outside plant by replacing 2.5-Gb/s based channels with 10-Gb/s channels. To demonstrate this capacity upgrade, we replaced twelve 2.5-Gb/s channels with 10-Gb/s channels. This hybrid WDM system (10 Gb/s X 12 channels + 2.5 Gb/s X 4 channels) did not have any significant power penalties in both externally modulated 10-Gb/s channels and direcdy modulated 2.5-Gb/s channels.
