Abstract

In this study, a quasi-static cyclic loading test was conducted on a two-span reinforced concrete frame to investigate the beam elongation phenomenon. The load–drift ratio responses and failure modes of the test specimens were examined, and the local response of the column members was analyzed to calculate the force and displacement caused by beam elongation. Based on the results, constitutive equations representing the beam elongation phenomenon were derived, and the design implications were proposed for the criteria of the beam-column strength ratio and joint shear strength presented in the ACI 318–19 code. The proposed design implications were found to accurately simulate the experimental results.
