Abstract

The effect of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) on system performance was discussed. The outage probabilities expected for NRZ and RZ formats due to first-order PMD as a function of the electrical receiver bandwidth was studied using the two-step method. Results showed that RZ outperforms NRZ for electrical receiver bandwidths below about 0.75 w.
