Abstract

In apartments in Korea, fire alarm sounder systems consist of the fire bell that is installed at the stairway hall, and the emergency broadcasting device that is installed in the living room. Previous studies showed that fire alarm sounder systems installed in apartment buildings might not be able to adequately notify sleeping residents of a fire outbreak. Moreover, the rate of recognition of the fire bell's sound was very poor. This study considers the fire bell recognition conditions via sound attenuation in apartment buildings with a small floor area of 81 m 2 and a large floor area of 184 m 2. The A-weighted sound pressure level of various spots in the households and the differences between the sound pressure levels of the two points in front of and behind the door, D p, were measured. Results showed that the overall sound attenuation was significant, about 5 dBA, in the household with a large floor area. Also considered was the improvement in the fire alarm sounder hearing conditions using Raynoise (Ver. 1) and the D p of the bedroom doors.
