Abstract

Phil-Suk Kim and Yun-Suk Lee examines the changes in familism in South Korea. They found that the support for traditional family values that prioritize the whole family over individual family members gradually weakened through the decades. Moreover, they found significant gender and generation gaps in familism; women are more likely to disagree with traditional family values and expectations of having a son, but older people tended to strongly agree with these attitudes than younger people.
