Abstract

The magnitude of the imaginary part of the inner modulation transfer function of the cutting dynamics, derived from a simplified discrete formulation of the overall three dimensional cutting dynamics transfer function, is introduced for tool wear monitoring. The on-line implementation of the method in a turning operation corroborates the strong correlation between the magnitude of the imaginary part at the cutting system's natural frequencies and the width of the wear land.
