Abstract

Health effect of metropolitan railway noise is studied by surveying the intensity of annoyance and sleep disturbance of people exposed to the noise radiated from the elevated bridge structure. Combined method of interview and group survey is adopted for cost-effectiveness. The noise exposure level of a household is determined by noise mapping utilizing a software package and the validity of the prediction is partially guaranteed by field measurement. Dose-response curves including %HA (highly annoyed)- and %HSD (highly sleep-disturbed)-noise level are constructed. Statistical analysis is performed to find the correlation among the factors including self-conscious frequency of exposure, sensitivity, annoyance, frequency of awakening, quality of sleep, degree of sleep disturbance. It has been found that the majority of people in Seoul are exposed to excessive level of noise which may effect health.
