Abstract

The impacts of signal excited state absorption (ESA) on gain and noise figure (NF) in a Bismuth oxide-based erbiumdoped fiber amplifier was theoretically and experimentally investigated. The signal ESA reduces the gain bandwidth by ∼7 nm compared with that of the theoretical calculation one that can be obtained without signal ESA. NF was also observed to be degraded at wavelengths of 1625∼1640 nm.
