Abstract

In this paper, we propose a multi-function unit which can support DMX512, UART, IrDA, PWM, timer, counter, and protocol bridges in a single hardware IP. Embedded systems are required to support various peripheral functions according to their applications. Efficient supports for various peripheral functions are essential. The multi-function unit efficiently integrates the above functions by exploiting similarities in signal formats and hardware structures of the peripherals. The multi-function unit can be effectively used in LED lighting applications. Firstly, it supports protocols popular in LED lighting systems such as DMX512 and PWM. Secondly, it can be configured to operate as a standalone controller which allows the core processor to perform other tasks.
