Abstract

This study is on the assessment and mitigation of road traffic noise at Cheong-Ju city in Korea. The noise map of road traffic noise was made to investigate the present road traffic noise and to support municipal policy makers to frame environmental policy. GIS database sets including the information of roads, traffic, topography and buildings are required to build the noise map. These database sets are provided by the various departments of the regional administration in Cheong-Ju city. The areas, where the noise levels exceed the noise standard, are identified and the corresponding number of populations were calculated by utilizing the noise map. The result indicated that 22% of population in the city are exposed to the noise exceeding the noise standard. The number of residents impacted by traffic noise is calculated in noise exposed areas applied to the noise barriers, porous low-noise road surfaces, And an estimated cost and a size of noise control facilities is represented. Especially, buildings are predicted focusing on the high noise area exceeding the noise standard on the each floor noise level.
