Abstract

A novel approach to the design of a low phase noise oscillator is presented which optimizes the phase noise and the output power simultaneously. Using a load line analysis, oscillation power contours and 1/f noise up-conversion factor are predicted. In the implementation of the embedding network, a generalized formula is also derived, which includes the quality factors of the embedding elements. The proposed approach is applied to the design of a low phase noise UHF band voltage controlled oscillator for the mobile communication system.
