Abstract
A titanium dioxide (TiO 2) photocatalyst has the potential to decompose various toxic gases and to oxidize organic compounds, such as harmful dioxins into harmless compounds such as CO 2 and H 2O, by irradiation with UV light. This study presents the results of a study on photocatalytic reactions for Ti0 2-coated phosphor composite particles. Nanocrystalline titanium dioxide layers were directly coated on alkaline-earth aluminate phosphor, CaAl 2O 4Eu 2+,Nd 3+, particles by using atomic layer deposition (ALD) and photocatalytic reactions were analyzed using the degradation of a methylene-blue aqueous solution under UV, visible and sunlight irradiation. TiO 2 ALD-coated phosphor powders showed photocatalytic mechanisms that were different from those of pure TiO2. The absorbance in a solution of TiO 2 ALD-coated phosphor decreased much faster than that of pure TiO 2 under visible irradiation. Also, TiO 2 ALD-coated phosphor powders showed a photocatalytic reactivity similar to that of pure TiO 2 under sunlight irradiation.
