Abstract

In this study, a new signal system was proposed and evaluated using SUMO (Simulation of Urban Mobility) to improve urban traffic flow. The signal and traffic volume information for Anyang City Hall Intersection, Gwanpyeong Intersection, and Pyeongchon Intersection, provided by AI-Hub for AI-based signal optimization, were utilized. The research methodology involved grouping the signal durations of the three intersections by phases and generating adjustment values that increase or decrease the durations by 1-second intervals from -10 seconds to +10 seconds. These adjustment values were combined using the Cartesian product to create all possible combinations, resulting in a total of 3,081 simulations. These simulations were compared and analyzed against the original simulation results. The study found an approximately 10% change in average travel time, average waiting time, and average speed, confirming the improvement of the traffic signal system. However, the results did not consider the minimum green time required for pedestrians to safely cross the crosswalks. When considering the minimum green time, the change was about 1% to 2%. On weekend mornings, the average travel time and average waiting time increased, showing no improvement in the traffic signal system. Further research considering pedestrian crosswalks is deemed necessary.
